An air conditioning (AC) system is meant to keep you comfortable during hot weather. However, the level of comfort depends on how effectively your AC system functions, which in turn depends on the quality of insulation in the house. This article discusses how insulation makes your AC system work efficiently.

Insulation
Put simply, insulation is done to stop heat from entering your house and to maintain comfortable temperature in the house. The objective of insulation is to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature in the home environment.

Insulation makes your AC system function effectively in summer - in summer it keeps the needed cooling. Thus, insulation does not allow leakage of cool air and the home is cool throughout the day.

If insulation is not done properly, it results in inefficiency of the AC system, because the hot air from outside becomes a barrier to your AC system's efficient function and this results in an uncomfortable environment in the home. This will make your AC system work more intensively to bring in the required change in temperature and hence it consumes more energy. ...
... Note that proper insulation could help you save 10-20% on your power bills.

Provide proper insulation to different parts of the home
It is important to make your home insulated properly throughout. Taking professional help in this regard is a sensible idea. You need to insulate the areas such as wall cavities and seal leaks if any.

Wall cavities
Cavities in walls cause too much heating in summer, if not plugged properly. The air between the sheaths of walls enables the heat exchange. When insulated, the heat transfer reduces. Hence insulate such cavities, if any, in walls.

Exterior and roofing walls
Exterior and roofing walls are exposed to sunshine and affect the temperature in the interior of the house. This depends on whether the house is east-west faced with windows or south faced without any protection of shadow. You need to insulate these walls to protect your AC system to function at better efficiency.

Seal the leaks
While doing plumbing, electric wiring or while duct installation, technicians may drill holes in the walls. These holes constitute gaps and lead to leakage of air from outside in to the home and vice versa. Even small gaps can cause considerable leak.

Storm doors
Storm windows reduce the amount of heat entering the home in hot weather. Install them to prevent outside and inside air leaking to the other side. Such air badly affects the performance of the AC system as in either case. Make sure your storm doors are equipped with low emissivity glass (as per standards given by Department of Energy). Low emissivity glazing coat applied on the outside face of the glass pane reduces heat exchange into the home.

Use energy efficient windows and reduce the size of glass area
Look for ENERGY STARĀ® marked windows to ensure that you opt for the most energy efficient windows. Keep the size of the glass area less unless the glass is energy efficient as it causes green-house effect leading to high temperature in the home.
