Technology In The Classroom
Technology works in environments that support it. Private schools self-select for parents who are willing to invest financially in their children’s education despite their low-income. Enough evidence is present in several researches and survey reports to show that parental spend on education/supplementary products and augmented learning is at a meteoric high. Thus fostering an environment where parents are open to trying new approaches to helping their children succeed academically and emotionally. Findings from KHOJ, a recent in depth research study that The Curriculum Company (TCC) commissioned in 100 schools across the country, interestingly point towards a staggering 85% when it comes to adoption of technology in the classroom. Ironically then the statistics for technology ‘usage’ in the classroom is at a startling low of just 20% nationwide.
We could call this an achievement gap or just plain apathy. Either way, the challenge looms large right in from of us and in an attempt to bridge this gap, TCC is currently running several small trials and pilots ...
... in the country with its new tablet based learning solution, Think Tab™. The idea is not to replace the larger than life interactive white boards with an uber cool hand-held Tab, and most definitely not to trade giant for another gadget if you will! The deeper science and belief that urged us at TCC to think of the tablet as a positive medium of instruction in the classroom and at home, goes right back to the basics, where we all came from.
The oldest system of education that we may all remember is from the epics of India or from our grandparents is the ‘gurukul’ system, in other words ‘lessons learnt from a guru/teacher in a personalized manner.’ Technology in the classroom creates opportunities for what one calls ‘individualized learning platforms’ (ILP) and this gets just that much more exciting when a child is using a Tablet as an ‘up-close’ interface. Think Tab from TCC is one such example of an ILP, and promises the potential to deliver a superior teaching-learning experience for teacher and taught all year round.
An IT Opportunities in the Education Market report broadcast that 78% of K-12 teachers and administrators believe that technology has positively impacted the classroom and productivity of students. Nearly 65% of educators surveyed also believe that students are more productive today than they were 3 years ago due to increased reliance of technology in the classroom. We at TCC envisage that with the advent of focused intervention of technology in the classroom, the dynamics of the traditional classroom will be reversed and facilitate autonomy both in teaching and learning.
