I truly admire writers who can write a script for a TV drama and then turn around and write one for a comedy. Even more impressive is the writer who can write for a middle aged audience and then crank out a script for a teen comedy. Granted, these people are rare, but they are also very much in demand. It's the same thing with being a copywriter. The more types of sales copy you can write, the more work you'll get. And even if you're just writing for yourself, you better be able to write to your audience or you're not going to be able to make the sales that you're hoping to make. This article will show you just what I'm talking about when it comes to writing for your audience.
Let's take two very diverse examples and you'll be able to see exactly what I mean by writing to your audience. Let's say you're writing sales copy for a teen acne product. You have to understand that the prospects who are most likely going to read your sales copy are kids. You're not going to speak to them like you would an adult. Plus, you're going to use examples in your writing that pertain to kids. For example, when you're discussing the benefits ...
... of your acne product, you want to mention how it's going to make it so that they can ask that cute guy or gal in the next seat to the prom or the school dance. By using visuals and examples that pertain specifically to that age group, you connect better with your prospect.
Now let's take the example of writing sales copy for an affordable life insurance product for people over 55. This is an area that is very much in demand by the way. People over 55 have a hard time getting life insurance if they don't already have it. So you want to focus on how easy it is to get even at their age (something that wouldn't work for a 30 year old) and how it's affordable, even on a fixed income and how it will bring them piece of mind after retirement, something that for these folks is coming up real soon. By focusing on the things that pertain to somebody who is over 55, you are connecting with your audience.
There is no big secret to doing this. You simply have to research your target market. You have to find out what their wants and needs are. You have to get into their head and understand what makes them tick, what's most important to them. This is going to be different for each demographic and for each item being sold to that demographic. While this does take a bit of work to get just right, in the long run you'll end up with more sales. And that is the bottom line.
