To form the right relationship with your dog, that engenders obedience, quality training is the key. There are good and bad points to dog training, but you'll have more success if you acquaint yourself with a variety of techniques. Use these tips to help you train your dog.

Have a good reward system when training your dog. Treats, toys and praise have to be given in the right doses and at the correct times. This is because a dog does not always understand what it is being rewarded for if they do not receive their treat at the right time.

Give your puppy some toys to chew on so they do not hurt while teething, keep other things they might want to chew on out of their reach! You should replace the object with a chew toy as soon as this occurs so your dog understands what is okay to chew on. If your puppy needs to chew because he is teething, try a frozen washcloth.

Dogs have tunnel vision and will focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.

Avoid training devices which are high ...
... end such as shock collars. They may not work very well and are far too expensive. Additionally, the use of devices such as shock collars can break your dog's spirit and ruin him as an enjoyable family pet. It is common for these tactics to create adverse behavior.

Training is an ongoing process - your dog needs to be constantly reminded of the rules! Many owners believe that once training is over, the dog will be set for life. Pets are just like humans, in that they follow habitual routines. For this reason, you need to reinforce what your dog has learned in training or better still, teach him a new trick every now and then.

Make sure training has an element of fun incorporated into it. Taking some time to have fun with your dog makes your dog like you more, which means fewer problems when training him. Having fun with your dog during training is one thing, but playing and having fun with your dog outside of training is also necessary.

Do not have overly long training sessions. Dogs have a short attention span, and keeping the training sessions short and sweet prevents them from becoming a boring chore your dog dreads. When you want to train more, give the dog a break and come back later.

Use a steady and commanding tone when speaking to your dog. Dogs tend to be well in tune with how their trainers are feeling. Use a stern voice when you are correcting your dog.

Do not give your dog too many treats; you could make him gain some weight when you offer an excessive number as rewards. When trying to feed their dogs a healthy diet, many people do not count the calories in the treats. These can add up fast.

Dog training is a great investment. An untrained dog can wreck your home and cause unnecessary stress, which then creates a hostile environment. If you follow the guidelines that you have just read, you can begin to do the right thing and work with your dog.
