Controlling Algae In Ponds - How To Remove Algae And Have Sparkling Clear Water In Your Pond
Over summer, algae thrive in water storages of all sizes, multiplying and spreading and robbing the water of life-giving oxygen. Because ponds of all sizes are generally shallow with significant surface area they are a fertile breeding ground for algae, particularly in the summer months. Algae in numbers are unsightly, can easily be seen, can block pumps and screens and can even be downright dangerous.
Toxic algae threaten livestock and humans.
Not all blue-green algal species are toxic, and even different strains of the same species may differ, with some being highly toxic and others non-toxic. All blue-green algae however, contain contact irritants. Even if the other more potent blue-green algal toxins are not present, the presence of these contact irritants make the water unsuitable for body contact or recreation if the blue-green algae are present in bloom proportions. Farm dams and ponds very often develop algal problems which range from physical inconvenience such as blocking of screens and filters, pumps and irrigation equipment to stock losses from toxicity caused by accumulation of blue green algae. ...
... The problems are aggravated where water is enriched by nutrient run-off, so heavily fertilized areas are a particularly good source of algal nutrients. In drought seasons where water levels are low, controlling algae in ponds may be a major problem also.
Research provides the answer
The result of an Australian Government sponsored research grant RCI developed Coptrol, a unique algaecide whose sole purpose is to remove algae from all kinds of stored water. Coptrol, the next generation algaecide, will clear up existing algae, including toxic blue green algae. It will not only remove algae but also prevents future algal growth keeping water clear and bright.
It is target specific to remove algae in water and should not be used for aquatic weed control. Common weeds often mistaken for algae are Duckweed, Azolla and Salvinia. It works in all kinds of water, hard or soft, salt or fresh, turbid or clear. It will clear up existing algae and prevent future growth, keeping water clear and bright. It does not harm fish (provided label directions are followed). It is approved for use for stock and wildlife.
