Medigap is a supplemental health insurance plan of Medicare and people only should buy it when their current health insurance plan doesn’t cover deductibles, co payments and certain health care bills. The government has approved ten plans of Medigap policy and they are denoted with the alphabet A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. All the plans are not available in every state. There are certain points to know about the Medigap policy.

It is federal law that only people age 65 or more have the right to purchase this policy during the open enrollment period. The duration of the period is six month since the day person become 65 years old and the enrolled in Medicare part B. People can’t make changes to their policy unless the national open enrollment period which starts from October 15 till December 7. The plan will be going into effect from the January 1st.

Although, the Medigap health insurance sold by many private insurance companies but they their terms and conditions will be the same and the only thing which differ is the cost.

Every state has different insurance company to sell the Medigap insurance plan and there might be difference in the sold price as well as the premium of the policy. People under 65 living in West Virginia can only buy the plan B Medigap insurance policy.

Medigap policy bought after January 1st doesn’t cover the drug prescription charges. People who want take the coverage of drug prescription then they need to buy the Medicare insurance plan D which covers the drug prescription charges. The Medigap policy has the following benefits.

In patient hospital care covers the Medicare part A coinsurance insurance and the addition 365 days.

Medical costs; cover the medical part B co insurance cover the hospital coverage.

Blood covers the first three pints of blood year.

There are other benefits people can gain such as the hospital annual deductible, skilled nursing care coinsurance and emergency care during foreign travelling.

Medigap policy doesn’t vary between plans for the same type and the cost can be different depending upon the insurance company. People should see the Medigap policies available in their states, decide base upon their health needs and costs of the insurance. People should compare policy before buying any policy.
