This is done via a process known as chip tuning, which involves modifying an erasable programmable read only memory chip in a vehicle’s electronic control unit. This is done with the ultimate goal of improving performance, whether that is better fuel efficiency, more power or cleaner emissions. Chip tuning should not, however, be confused with electronic control unit tuning that does not involve actually physically swapping the chip.

The electronic control unit is your car’s on-board computer which defines the timing of the ignition as well as the fuelling and boost pressure for all engine speeds. Altering and remapping your electronic control unit will change the way the engine is controlled and generally provide you with a better drive. In most cases the tuning program is installed electronically through the car’s diagnostic port without touching the electronic control unit and without replacing the chip.

This increase in performance is brought about by adjusting the ignition timing advance, though it’s important to remember to run a brand of high-octane petrol in order to avoid any problems. The car ...
... may also have its fuel maps altered to coincide with the stoichiometric ratio for petrol consumption. The modern car has so many limits on its performance capability which are imposed by manufacturers who have to allow for drivers who do not take any notice of service schedules – free your car from these limits and get the most out of your vehicle.

One alternative which may be used to modify an on-board chip is to add an external device, typically known as a tuning box. This option is generally only possible on modern engines and these can be easily removed to restore the vehicle to its pre-upgrade levels.

There are a number of places where you can go for your chip tuning who offer specialist electronic control unit remapping on all cars, vans and trucks. Technological advances have meant that this can be done simply and without being traceable, and often tailored to suit the individual needs of the vehicle owner.

With the price of fuel constantly on the rise and money tighter than ever before, the need for better fuel efficiency from your car is paramount. Even saving a small amount every time you visit the petrol station will add up to a significant saving over the course of the year. Cleaner emissions from your car will reduce your environmental footprint and may even result in a reduction in your vehicle’s tax.

If you are looking for more power or torque from your vehicle, this can be achieved through altering your chip. You can say goodbye to flat sports and turbo lag as your gear changes become sharper and more responsive. It will genuinely feel like you’ve gone for the bigger engine option - with more torque you will notice the increase in acceleration from low down in the revs range and when using taller gears.
