Data entry refers to entering of data into a computerized database or spreadsheet. The main job responsibilities of a data entry operator is to key in lists of items, numbers, or other data into computers or fill in forms that appear on a computer screen. They may also be expected to preserve the integrity of the information and make sure new data is entered correctly. Being a data entry worker is an important job as it involves keeping the company details up to date.

Lately however, many companies prefer to employ data entry telecommuters. This can help both the employer and employee. For the employer this means a reduction in costs. Such employers may also decide to cut down on other employee benefits such as employee tax contributions and health insurance costs. And for the employee, being employed as a data entry telecommuter means you have a normal job. The problems with being a data entry operator is that you will be expected to be seated for long hours on end and may have to work in a noisy environment. Data entry telecommuting allows these operators to work during hours of their choice allowing them to take breaks as an when they feel tired. Since the job of a data enterer is already one that causes high stress, travelling to and from the work place is an addition to this stress. Data entry telecommuting also does not require any form of traveling between the household and the workplace.

Data entry jobs, being the most common form of telecommuting, should not be too difficult to look up. Vacancies can be easily filled though, as many people want to work in such a flexible job. The criterion for entry into this job are important to know. Many companies expect data entry telecommuters to be able to do ten key by touch on the keyboard with almost no mistakes. Other requirements to be met include computer familiarity, a working computer at home and an internet connection.
