Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy - Pros And Cons
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or LSG as it is commonly known as is a kind of invasive surgery in which the stomach is reshaped. This is mainly done in patients that are very obese. It is basically a “minimally invasive” bariatric surgery. Whether or not you can go for the surgery needs to be decided by the surgeon.
The LSG procedure
In this surgery around 6 small sized incisions are made. The instruments for surgery and the laparoscope are passed through these incisions for the procedure. The abdomen is bloated up with gas so that the organs inside the stomach are clearly visible. Every effort is made not to hurt or injure the adjoining organs.
It is basically a surgery where “longitudinal resection” is carried out so that a sleeve like structure is obtained that is separated from the remaining part of the stomach by means of staples or clips. In this procedure as much as 85% of the size of the stomach is reduced. Consequently, the amount of food you consume is also reduced drastically.
What to expect?
If you are found to be an ideal candidate for this surgery, you will have to undergo ...
... a series of blood tests and scans if required. You will not feel any pain as the entire operation is done under general anesthesia. So, you will be in deep sleep. The surgery usually takes about one hour and you will be required to stay under the care of the surgeon and hospital experts for a day or two. You will be shifted to a recovery area before being shifted to your cabin or ward. In majority of the cases, you will be administered painkillers and other medicines that will help in healing the wound faster.
This is one of the most popular of all bariatric surgeries and is being widely opted for by the surgeons and the patients. However, it is important to know the advantages as well as the disadvantages of this procedure.
