There are many safety rules that we have imbibed from our childhood. Through motherly concerns and teacher admonitions, most of us know that we need to wash our hands before we eat, to wear seat belts while driving and be wary of talking to strangers.

This means only two things that there is an element of risk in everything that we do and that with the appropriate precautions we can overcome and eliminate it from our lives.

Scuba diving, thanks to the misleading fare dished out in films and on television, is made to look like a sport fraught with risks and danger. If we believed all that we saw in films, we would find sharks lurking behind rocks waiting to tear us to shreds, of people gasping for oxygen and people resurfacing on uninhabited islands - all very forbidding and fear-inducing but extremely unrealistic and far-fetched.

There are certain rules to follow, whether it is your first dive or your hundredth, which you must never, never overlook or forget and scuba diving will be one of the easiest and simplest forms of adventure entertainment.

Before you enter the sea, you need a lot of practice ...
... in confined monitored water. Once your trainer decides that you are ready for the open sea than venture into it without any trepidation or worry - just make sure that you have the right scuba diving equipment or snorkeling gear.

Never dive with scuba diving equipment that has not been tested earlier. Without the right scuba diving gear, scuba diving is just not possible. Without it you cannot breathe or see underwater. Malfunctioning equipment can be extremely hazardous so ensure that the gear is properly checked by an authorized technician regularly.

Never dive alone. If you can dive with someone whose skills are better than yours than it is all the more better. Your buddy can correct you and advise you if you are doing things the wrong way. When you are diving with a buddy, you should also be concerned about his or safety and not only yours, so appraise yourself about skills like sharing oxygen, finding a lost buddy and providing first aid in an emergency.

Don't suck in more air than you need. Breathe as you would on land. People have a tendency not to exhale when they are coming up, but this could lead to lung-injuries. There is no need for you to worry. Your oxygen and air requirements are being taken care of by your scuba diving equipment.

Scuba itself is an acronym that stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus. Moreover, apart from regulators, tanks and buoyancy control devices, good scuba diving equipment allows divers to monitor their air-supply through pressure gauges that show how much pressure is there in the oxygen cylinders.

Don't stay down too long, however tempting the scenery and don't dive too deep. Shallower dives will allow you to stay down there for a longer period. If you dive deep you run the risk of running out of oxygen. Less than 100 feet is a shallow dive, anything beyond that is a deep dive.

Last but not the least, make every dive a learning experience. Keep a record of the dive, the time you went in and when you resurfaced. The animals you saw and the scuba gear that you used - all such information, especially regarding scuba diving equipment, will help you significantly in making the right choices, when you dive again.

Author Bio: John Sims has written several dozen articles on scuba diving gear that were published in trade journals and several widely read publications.
