No matter where you live, you face a variety of risks. Bad things will happen at unexpected time. The question is what do you have packed up and ready to go for quick access in an emergency? What’s inside your bug out bag? That’s the question I set out to answer in this article.

The get home bag is simply a portable collection of gear organized to meet your survival needs for 72 hours. It’s for those unseen situations where the only one you can depend on is yourself. Here you’ll get good ideas on how to build the right bug- out-bag for your individual circumstances.

Once you decide to pack, remember the rule of threes: You can live for three hours without shelter (in extreme conditions), you can live for three days without water and you can live for three weeks without food. By this rule, depending on where you live, keeping your body temperature regulated is the top priority when it comes to outfitting your bug-out-bag. Shelter for bug-out purposes will be a combination of the clothing you wear. Working from the inside out, we’ll first take up the subject of clothing.

Clothing

Your bug-out ...
... should include footwear, headgear, two pairs of socks, long sleeve t-shirts, pants, belt, upper body wear and waterproof outwear. The footwear you choose should be durable that you can depend on to last for an extended wilderness stay. Under the boots or shoes, you should be wearing wool and synthetic socks, the layers depending on the temperature. I have mentioned two pairs of socks so that one pair can be drying out while the other is in use. When the climatic condition become worse, your waterproof outwear will protect you till you find a temporary shelter.

Tents

Never forget to pack the tents. Any tent that is lightweight enough to carry simply will not last in a long-term bug-out situation. Try to find the best quality tents.

Hard bottles

These bottles are durable and crush resistant. Get the wide mouth version, which are easier to fill. It is advised to pack the bottles with measuring scales. This is convenient for preparing dehydrated meals. You can also keep a metal water bottle in your get home bag that can be used to boil and purify drinking water collected in the field.

Fire-making tools

The simplest of all tools for making fire are disposable butane lighters, which weigh practically nothing and will last a long time if you use them conservatively. Despite the convenience of butane lighters, you need other alternatives i.e. the flint and steel which has a long history as a reliable wilderness fire starter.

Food

Finding food while on the move is going to be more problematic than finding water. This is why it is essential to have a supply of high-energy food items in your bug out bag. Think in terms of calorie-to-weight ratio and choose the highest calorie foods such as sports bars, meal replacement bars or lifeboat rations.

Other options includes knives, weapons for defense, fishing tools, trapping gear and other hunting kits.
