Circumvent Upsetting Vacation Arguments
Well researched vacation plans that include a careful review of cheap travel options and the purchase of cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, cheap auto rentals, or cheap vacation packages can quickly go bad if you and the person joining you on vacation get bogged down on common vacation arguments.
Even though vacations are supposed to be about rest and recreation for most participants, they can often become quite stressful. Vacationers are not following their typical routines and expectations for having a good time are often quite high. Any existing dissatisfaction in a relationship may lead to damaging arguments that erupt from initially mild disagreements.
Experts have found that couples do not tend to argue about new things. Instead they tend to bicker about the same things repeatedly. By fixing the initial problem such as whether to take less luggage or prepare a more realistic budget arguments can be avoided before they explode.
The following are some of the most common vacation argument starters and suggestions on how to best deal with them:
• When it comes to deciding what time ...
... to arrive at the airport, be willing to compromise. Depending on how anxious a person is about this issue, sometimes it is smartest to accommodate the person most concerned about arriving late. Having a person overly upset at the start of a vacation is never good.
• Driving and figuring out which roads to take at an unfamiliar destination can be stressful. By printing out directions before leaving or bringing a GPS device arguments are less likely to ensue. You should build in time to get lost since this often happens when driving in a new destination.
• Deciding on which activities to participate in when can be a major point of disagreement. Talk about the activities each of you want to do before departing and decide jointly which activities you want to do together. Remember, shared experiences are often the highlights of a vacation. However, if one of you want to do something the other will not enjoy, be open to doing that activity solo.
• Avoid arguments about how much money you will be spending by agreeing on a budget prior to departure. You should be open to unexpected exceptions, but consider whether a purchase is worth an argument if your partner does not agree.
• When deciding what to eat and where rotate vacation days letting each partner select where to eat and when every other day. Avoid selecting a restaurant where there is really nothing on the menu for one person to eat, or is much more expensive than your budget.
• If you find yourself at the brink of a serious argument, give yourself some time before discussing the issue. People who lash out as soon as they are upset tend to come across more harshly than intended which often results in a harsh response further escalating the disagreement.
