Harry Beck in 1931 designed the first diagram of the transit system of London. The London Tube Maps were then moved for design to Harold Hutchison. He was not a designer but presented his own views in the map by removing the smooth corners and introducing areas which were highly cramped near Liverpool Street ...

The London Underground network has lines built by several individual private companies in the beginning but these companies had regular fallouts and disputes.

To find some sort of progress the London Passenger Transport Board was formed in 1933. It controlled all the separately lines into one central line. In 1985, the lines were made independent by the UK Government as London Underground Limited or LUL. Since 2003 LUL was controlled by Transport for London (TfL). TFL controls all the transport system of London. TFL is run by a board whose commissioner is appointed by London's mayor. In the present time London has about 270 stations and a track of around 250 miles. The London Underground system is the longest in the world and has the most number of stations.

About billion journeys were made in the London metro system in 2007. This makes London Underground one of the busiest in the world.
