What To Do If You Get Sick On Vacation
Who hasn't been there? You're enjoying a wonderful vacation on the beach when you catch the flu, or a terrible stomach virus, and spend the rest of your trip curled up in bed in your hotel room. Getting sick or hurt during your trip not only ruins a great vacation, it can also cost a fortune. Unfortunately, many travelers simply aren't prepared for accidents or sickness during a trip, although there are steps you can take to prepare and recover.
A national travel survey called RX for Travel Health found that a whopping 63% of travelers reported getting sick during their vacation. Most of their illnesses were preventable, with the most common being sunburn followed by motion sickness and allergies. Rather than visiting an emergency room or suffering through it, consider calling a house call doctor on your trip for a flat fee and the relief you need to get back in the sun.
Be Prepared!
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Do your best to avoid getting sick to begin with by planning before you even leave the house! A few weeks before you leave, talk with your health care provider to make sure your ...
... insurance will cover you when you travel out of the area, and talk to your doctor to find out if there's anything you need to know. Your doctor will tell you if there's anything going around, what you can do to prevent it and if you will need any vaccinations.
It's also a good idea to to pack a first aid kit with over-the-counter cures, including: hand sanitizer, band-aids for blisters and scrapes, Pepto Bismol tablets, Alka-Seltzer, Imodium, Tums, pain relievers, sunscreen and Benadryl.
According to that same travel survey, people who get sick during their vacation spend 21.55% more than those who don't. If this has ever happened to you, you know just how expensive medical costs can be when you're away from home. If you aren't able to avoid getting sick or hurt, a more affordable option than an emergency room visit is a house call doctor.
House Call Physicians
If you do get sick while you're out of town, or out of the country even, you may want to consider doctor house calls. This option is typically cheaper than travel medical and emergency evacuation insurance, and you can receive treatment right in your hotel room. A house call doctor can treat illness or minor injuries, including allergic reactions, diarrhea, respiratory infections, pink eye, urinary infections, sprains and offer travel medication.
This non-emergency medical attention is available 24/7 and the cost may be less than $300 to get the care you need to enjoy the rest of your vacation.
No one enjoys getting sick when they're supposed to be splashing in the water or soaking up the sun. Do your best to prevent injuries and illness by packing a first-aid kit and using sunscreen, and turn to a house call doctor if illness strikes and you want to get back on your feet as soon as possible.
