Copywriting Tips - Do Sales Letters Have To Be Linear
Sales letters are pretty standard, wouldn't you say? You have your headline, intro paragraph, nice little story, some bullet points of what your product does, some testimonials, an offer and a strong close. But does it really have to be that linear? Well, I'm going to explore this question a little bit in this article and show you why a sales letter doesn't have to be quite so rigid as far as structure goes. After you are done reading this, you will probably have many new ideas for writing your own copy.
People limit their own way of thinking. Linear thought is one of the reasons why it takes so many of us to get from point A to point B. We are programmed from a very early age that we have to do this before we do that. For example, we believe that after we get out of school, we have to accept an entry level position paying minimum salary. We don't believe that we can go right to the head of the class. And yet, there are people who do it everyday. And the reason is because they don't think linearly. They are always looking many steps ahead and simply planning for them.
Well, there is no reason why you can't do this ...
... with your sales letter. Why not, instead of starting out with a big red headline, have a shining testimonial right at the top of the page? Why not let people see what others are raving about, before they even read one word? If they've been pre screened, meaning that they have some idea of what they're going to find when they get to the sales page, why not mix things up? I've tried it and I've had amazing results with it. As a matter of fact, my very first sales letter didn't even have a headline. It sold 200 copies a month for almost a year.
Too many times we got boxed into linear thought and it stifles our growth. We can't se beyond the step 1, step 2, step 3 mentality. We accept what has been given to us and we just mindlessly go about doing it because somebody said it's the way to go. Well, I say, the heck with that. Expand your mind. What's the worst that can happen if you do things a little differently? You fail? So what? It won't be the last time. I can't tell you how many times I have failed.
So get creative. Try putting that guarantee right up a top and see how it works.
