Revelation From Verification Process Are Helpful
“Companies should have a background screening policy in place and a strict adherence should be observed.” This is one piece of advice that has been echoed lot many times. But have anyone thought about why is it being stressed so much.
It is best to know from the horse’s mouth. Verification companies can provide with so many instances of employee frauds that background checks become a natural necessity.
During background verification process, many startling revelations come to the surface. These learning actually make us realize that it was a good step to conduct background check on so-and-so person.
For instance, during the routine verification of a company’s employees, something was just not right in the credentials of one of them. The employee in question, Navneet, had cited two previous employers, with relevant documents of one of them. During the employment verification, the employment with sufficed documents was first contacted and three things came out- firstly, the employment dates were altered and secondly, Navneet had died a year after leaving that organization! Thirdly, she was also married.
...
... The second employer denied ever hiring navneet. However, another lady with same address and father’s name was employed with them.
The only explanation to such revelations was that they were sisters. This was confirmed with further verification. The verification report sent to the employer included all these facts and revelation. Finally, navneet confessed to impersonating her sister.
This case is a clear reminder that an employee can hide pertinent details at any time, which is nothing but defrauding the company. And, as said before, this calls for a background screening policy. Background verification will ensure that the company is in the know of all the true information about the employees. Such knowledge would also provide clear indication on the personality traits that might be of some harm to the organization. Such traits could be dishonesty, disloyalty, etc. A person with an undesired past has higher chances of indulging in similar activities harmful to this organization, just as it harmed the previous employer.
Even if it may be a minor irregularity, but the employee is expected to be honest when it comes to revealing all the details asked for. Hiding or falsifying facts is dishonesty on the part of employee and can not be justified. Hence it is best to give out all the details to the employer so that a later revelation does not give a bad impression to the employer.
