Supercharging Your Businesses' Staff
While most businesses wouldn't even be entertaining the idea of hiring anyone in this economy, the small business owners are actively seeking new employees. It talking to one recruiter, he described it as "employee upgrading". With the unemployment rate so high right now, there are plenty of qualified (and in some cases, over qualified) candidates looking for employment. Many of these people were not fired because of lack of performance, but simply because the company they were working for had to downsize. With this large pool of potential candidates on the market, many companies are starting to position their companies for growth by snatching up these highly qualified workers.
Even in my business, I have started looking at under achieving employees or people that just don't have the growth potential to get us to where we need to be. For example, one of our sales people has slowly but steadily been producing less and less each month, while the rest of our sales team has shown consistency or steady growth. I put out an ad for a sales person and received 80 resumes in the first two days! I was able to find ...
... a highly qualified sales person, with experience in the industry, who was able to hit the ground running and produce twice the numbers of the under performing sales person.
No business is too small to take advantage of the employment market. One business owner that I know was able to give a VP of Marketing a temporary position to help layout a marketing and advertising plan for his business. The VP of Marketing was more than happy just to have the work, and they both went into it with the understanding that it was a temporary position until they could find another VP position (or something similar). The business owner was benefiting from their vast experience (someone that he couldn't afford to hire for a full time position), and the employee was able to maintain an income while searching for a full-time position.
So now is the time to really step back and take a look at your business. Look for areas that you could use some improvement, and areas that you can target for growth. Whether you need to fill a full-time position or would just like to get some temporary help from an seasoned expert, now is the time to take advantage of the pool of employees that are available.
