Pizza is one of the most popular foods in American culture. This is primarily due to 3 things; Pizza is good, easy and cheap to make.

The traditional pizza is a perfect combination of crust, sauce and cheese. In addition, different toppings of meat and vegetables can provide a a variety of taste for a relatively healthy alternative to other dishes that make it to the table.

Many think Pizza can only come from a hot oven at home or the local pizza shop. But grilled pizza is becoming a more popular version that utilizes a gas or charcoal grill instead of the basic oven. This is a great choice when you are looking for something to make on the grill instead of the normal hamburger or hot dog usually served at the typical backyard barbecue.

As in a traditional pizza, the crust is a fundamental component of any recipe. The grilled version can use also the same dough recipe as the traditional style. An alternate choice could be a flat bread or Boboli type of crust to begin your creation. If these are used, the crust can bake much faster, so your recipe should accommodate the reduced cooking time.

1. Ready made pizza crusts can be a great substitute for a homemade crust. This could be the basic type found near the biscuits in the dairy case
2. Some Grocery stores will also stock pre-made pizza dough. These may already be frozen and will need to thawed before they can be rolled out. If they are not already frozen, they may only be fresh for a limited period of time and will need to be used or frozen within the expiration period
3. Some Pizza Shops sell their dough at a very affordable price. This can be a great timesaver while still getting an authentic pizza crust.

Ensure you are starting with a clean grill to prevent the nasty black stuff from appearing on the bottom of your pizza crust. Pre-heat to a normal operating temperature. If using a charcoal grill, the coals should be hot enough to prevent you from holding your hand about 4-5 inches for 2-3 seconds.

Prepare your sauce, cheese and toppings and have them close by before starting to cook the crust. This is crucial as the crust will cook quickly and you will need to be ready to apply the layers efficiently.

Have a large amount of olive oil handy to brush the crust quickly. This help to prevent it from sticking to the grill. Housing it in a large mouth jar with a pastry brush will ensure you are able to apply swiftly during cooking.

You will also need a large wooden or metal peel to maneuver the pizza crust. This is like a large spatula that helps flip the crust over when ready. You have seen them in your typical pizza shop to move pizzas around the oven.

Once everything is staged you are ready to go:

1. Add a bit of flour on the peel and spread across the surface. This will keep the dough from sticking to the peel.

2. Roll out the pizza dough on the peel and stretch to best fit. Brush a coating of olive oil on top of the dough. This will keep the dough from sticking to the grill when you flip it over.

3. Apply to grill by flipping the dough onto the grill platform. Watch carefully as the dough will bubble like a pancake and need to be flipped within a couple of minutes.

4. Coat another layer of olive oil to the crust and get ready to remove the crust from the surface and turn it over using the peel.

5. After the crust has been turned over, add sauce, cheese and toppings and bake to perfection. Apply ingredients in thin layers too cook quickly.

6. Remove the Pizza from the grill using the peel, cut into appropriate slices and serve.

Grilled Pizza is a great alternative to the normal baked version. It adds a bit of flair to the normal process, but more importantly, the grilling process adds a unique flavor to any recipe and is fun to make.
