As mother of the bride you want to look your best without upstaging the bride but what colour do you choose, hat or fascinator, long or short - there are just so many choices the whole process is a little bit complex!  We’ve rounded up so top tips to help you pick the perfect outfit.

Colour
Gone are the days when a mother of the bride is expected to wear a ghastly garment solely because it’s the same colour as the bridesmaids.  These days mums are choosing a colour that’s right for them but still blends or compliments the colours of bridal party.  Only one rule here – you can’t wear white!

Style
Two considerations for this one.  Firstly you need a style that suits your shape, if you don’t like the tops of your arms buy a dress with a sleeve or matching bolero or maybe you’re worried about your tummy, opt for a dress with a detail to draw the eye away from ‘problem’ areas.  Secondly you need a style appropriate to the venue – a more traditional three piece might be perfect for a church wedding while a more contemporary marquee affair may call for a shorter length ...
... or more casual feel.

Comfort
A wedding makes for a long day so while you want to look amazing it’s important to be practical too.  Think about the season of the wedding and plan to ‘be prepared’ – for a winter wedding shop during the autumn / winter season and think about adding a coat or bolero.  If it’s a spring / summer occasion opt for a natural fabric that will keep you cool, calm and collected.

Accessorise
Once you have found your dream outfit ask the sales assistant for advice on shoes, bag and accessories.  It can be useful to take your outfit with you when selecting the finishing touches or this can be a great way for the mother of the bride to link in with the bridal party.

On the Day
It’s a special occasion so book in to have your hair and make up done on the morning – it can be better to use your own hairdresser as they know your hair and will create a style to suit you.  Don’t forget to pack your tissues, as these things do tend to get emotional.
