The Progeny Of Cloud And Mobility Holds The Key To The Future
About 6 years into the smartphone revolution, one would assume that the user preferences and the devices that meet them would have settled down at least into a stable humdrum. If the market data is reviewed however, this is not even close to the reality, not by miles. The smartphone arena is flooded with numerous devices and form factors, with new ones arriving almost daily. The war of screen sizes, CPUs and other specs is waging hot, with no imminent signs of abating. However, one thing is clear, while users may have a difficult choice in deciding their next device, they no longer have a choice of refusing the cloud. Cloud today is as important, if not more, to the functioning of user and enterprise mobility, as the device itself.
Why Cloud?
The concept of cloud is not new. It is a reincarnation of the concept of timeshare of the 70s. Back then, one had to shift the workloads from local machines to a remote one for the want of processing power. Remember the screens of TTY (teletypes), whose only feature was that it could print. With no local processing or much of a UI, it was rightly called a ‘dumb’ terminal. ...
... All the execution and processing was done behind the scene, at the other end of the wire (a dial-up one). The sheer cost of provisioning local compute was a major deterrent to the ‘personal’ computer back then.
Today, the Cloud plays a similar role. However, the component in question today is not the compute, but the storage. The mobile handsets are far more advanced than the TTY interfaces of the 70’s. In fact, any comparison with the ‘dumb’ counterparts of the days past would be an insult to the ‘smart’ devices of today. However, just like providing local compute was a challenge because of the cost 40 years ago, providing enough local storage to store all the data that the user and his applications use is a challenge today because of the form factor and size limitations. Therefore, we turn to the global timeshare, the Cloud.
The data on our mobile devices, be it personal, or corporate, is essential, and more importantly, confidential and valuable. So the decision of whether to use your smart device to display the craziness of your 14 day vacation, or to store large customer presentations on it, becomes a challenge.
Access is important, not the location
At the end of the day, you need your data to be available to you whenever you wish to use it. With that goal in mind, you should not care about the physical location of the data. Just like your mailbox, you do not know where the server is on which the mailbox resides, but you have access to your emails whenever you log on. Services like filesanywhere from Copper Mobile help you store your data in the cloud, and access it anywhere, anytime, and even share them with others.
Another important feature you look for when making a choice for data management, is its durability. Is your data safe in your device? What if you lose the device, or it gets stolen? What if it gets corrupted or you smash it so bad it can’t be repaired? Are you willing to go through the pain of manually entering all your contacts and reloading all your applications?
Today users can change a device, and reload all their applications and data from services like iCloud, Google backup and others. These services keep your device backed up as you go, without any manual intervention.
Final word
The applicability of technology in our lives, and not its existence is paramount. The confluence of mobility and cloud has created many such opportunities that make our lives easier. This relationship holds the key to an exciting future.
