Who invented the first crackers and how?


The first cracker was made in 1792 by John Pearson in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Pearson was trying to make a type of biscuit that would last longer than the sailor’s biscuits. He called his invention “Pearson’s Pilot Bread”, which was was later known as “hardtack” or “sea biscuit”. This type of biscuit became incredibly popular among sea-faring folk due to its long shelf life.

How did crackers as snack food came into existence?


In 1801, a man named Josiah Bent derived the name cracker when he accidentally burnt the batch of what we now call crackers. As it made a crackling sound while burning, it was named so. You can say that he is the pioneer of cracker as a snack food. To sell them as a snack food he improved the flavour, which eventually tasted even better than “Pearson’s Pilot Bread”

The holes are there for a reason, not just for decoration or convenience in some manufacturing process. Without these holes, the crackers will not bake correctly. These holes allow steam to escape during cooking. This keeps the crackers flat and also help to properly crisp the crackers.
