One does not need an excuse to try some cake making. The pastime has been around for thousands of years and these products are always popular. Baking one is not a difficult task, but things can and often do go wrong.

A person needs to make sure that the oven you are using is true to its temperature. Sometimes, the temperature of the oven says one thing and then it turns out that it is not the perfect setting to bake at. When this happens, it is a good idea to invest in a good oven thermometer.

More often than not, the basic sponge version is used for kid's party creations. The trend lately though is for carrot and the old traditional fruit and nut loaves. Generally, the fruit and nut version was made for Christmas and wedding cakes. Having said this though, it must be added, that nothing beats the old chocolate sponges. Everyone loves a chocolate treat as well.

When making one, it is important to keep to the recipe. If you have had great success with a recipe and want to spruce it up a little, it is easy enough to do by adding one or two more ingredients such as toffee chips or choc chips. One can also use ...
... other ingredients, such as nuts, which also spruce up the normal sponge. Whatever kind you make, it is important to make sure that the measurements are perfect. Too much or too little of just one ingredient can make it flop.

Often times, you will find that you have added all the ingredients according to the recipe and then when you open the oven up to test to see if it is cooked, the center takes a dip and it hollows out in the middle. Should this happen to your creation, it could be that there is too much liquid in the sponge, or that the temperature of the oven has been wrong. Often, it does not reach the perfect temperature and it is therefore advisable for you to get yourself an oven thermometer.

When your cake is completely baked through, it is time to take it out of the oven. Let it cool down completely before turning it out of the pan. Once you have turned it out of the pan you can prepare it for the icing.

Start on the top and then proceed to the sides. Once you have got the thin layer on the whole cake, you can now progress to putting on the rest of the icing. The frosting should be made in accordance with a recipe. Usually, one will use special sugar, butter and a little milk. Some may also add other ingredients such as coffee, chocolate or other treats to the icing or frosting.

Be careful not to over ice the treat you have baked as often a nice one is spoilt by too much sugar or frosting. One could also take this opportunity to decorate it with little sugar flowers or fairies for girls, or fire trucks or cow boys for little men. The sponge variation makes for a great birthday present, while the actual cake making process becomes more fun.
