Finding Balance In A Fast Changing World
You may have noticed that the world we live in today doesn't work by the same rules as the world we lived in a year ago, or five years ago. The planet, and everything living here, is evolving. This is normal, and yet it seems that the rate of evolution has sped up. The speed of new ideas, new technologies, and new ways of living is sometimes "mind blowing".
I've written before about dealing with such fast paced change. And yet, what I haven't really talked about is how we deal with the people around us who are - consciously or unconsciously - freaking out over all of the changes.
I've seen it recently in our local government. Suddenly, all sorts of weird (and seemingly unnecessary) laws are being passed. These laws are going to be difficult to enforce, and provide little, if any, benefit to the town. So what is the motivation here?
My guess is that our local town and county officials are feeling the effects of rapid change, and rather than "going with the flow", they're attempting to grab hold of something, anything, that gives them the illusion of being in control.
Haven't we all been there? Haven't ...
... we all tried to control a situation or hold onto something that was best let go? Since we can often see a bit of ourselves in others, then perhaps - just perhaps - we can exercise some patience and understanding when we see people freaking out and trying to control the uncontrollable.
That is not to say that we allow our governing bodies, our companies, or our friends and family to use us as doormats. We can still hold people accountable, but perhaps we don't have to crucify them. Perhaps we can find that space between righteous indignation and placid apathy where we can call on people to behave with integrity, but do so without making them the cause of all evils.
We all have our good days and our bad days, and we all have a lot of change to deal with. If we do our best to flow with the changes, act with integrity, and exhibit as much ease and grace as we can muster; then our personal lives will be much more fun.
As for dealing with those who may not be as "graceful" as we imagine ourselves to be? My suggestion is to look for balance, come from your heart, and have compassion. After all, I'm sure that the most graceful among us look pretty clumsy to the angels.
