Metals have long been the favourite source for jewellery. The flexible properties of metal give easy access to mould as required. Hence, they are known for reliability, durability, price and looks.

Metal jewellery can just not be purchased without any innate knowledge of it. There are various metals used for making of jewellery. Sometimes they are used in combinations. Metals have an ancient history in making ornaments. Gold, silver, platinum and copper were extensively used. Now you may find other non-precious metals. The precious metal is non-reactive and easy to mould. Now a day's metal jewellery is created using various metals and sometimes in combination. But only a few metals are used for making. Most of the jewellery is contemporary in nature. Unlike plastic some of the metals used may irritate the skin. Hence it is important to have a detailed knowledge of metals before buying. The most popular metals in the jewellery are Gold, platinum and silver.

Gold: Topping the list is Gold, which is popular from ancient times and still holds the number one position. Gold ranges in purity in Karats such as 24 (99.9%pure), ...
... 22 (91%), 18 (75%), 14 (58%) and 12 and 10 which are 50% and 41% pure. The cost increases with purity. Gold jewellery is best purchased in 18 and 14 karat. For the purest form of jewellery, look for the karat label on the piece before purchasing. You can check the less expensive stuff like the ones made of gold filled, white gold and gold plated. The first one uses a base metal with 5% of gold, the second one is combined with nickel, zinc, platinum and silver to make it look white and durable. This has a tendency to react with the skin. The last one is plated on base metal of thin strip. This looks similar to gold jewellery. It turns black with prolonged exposure to light and water. The duplicate gold jewellery is widely purchased. This is a mixture of very little gold and copper due to which the colour of the jewellery changes. The shine may fade over a period of time.

Silver: Because of its lustre and adaptable features silver outshines gold. It is also tested for its purity. Sterling silver is meant to be the purest form having 92% silver and 7% copper. Check for the purity labels on the jewellery before purchasing rings, earrings, bracelets, anklets and necklaces. Purest quality of silver is .999. This is considered as the most lustrous form of fine silver. Like gold plating silver plating is also very popular with a base metal. Silver is popular for its affordability.

Platinum: this is priced higher than gold. The jewellery in platinum is limited to finger rings for weddings. Sometimes you may find platinum jewellery in combination with gold. This looks really elegant when worn. The stamp of "PLAT" signifies its purest form.
