Maintaining a hospital clean room is no easy task. There are city, state and federal guidelines that must be adhered to. OSHA is the one to hit the hardest on regulations. They will dictate what can and can’t be in the room as far as supplies. They will demand how all equipment will be labeled prior to use. They will also dictate how any used supplies are to be marked and disposed of. Another area they will cover is how non-disposable equipment or supplies will be cleaned after contamination is found. OSHA does not joke around when it comes to the health and safety of people. If there is even any hint of a problem OSHA can come in and shut them down immediately. Here is one example.

OSHA States:
“OSHA requires:
Equipment and working surfaces:

All equipment and environmental and working surfaces shall be cleaned and decontaminated after contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials [29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(4)(ii)].
• Contaminated equipment, such as IV poles, requires labels or tags in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(1)(i)(H). The labels must also identify which portions ...
... of the equipment are contaminated.
• Some equipment, if grossly contaminated, must be cleaned with a soap and water solution prior to decontamination, as some anti-microbial products will not work in the presence of blood, which interferes with the sterilizing process. “

You can go to the OSHA website anytime to understand more about their rules and requirements. Keeping a hospital clean room up to standards is no easy task. Hospitals have staff hired just for the purpose of keeping the areas within specifications. Hospitals go thru many different certifications just to be able to open their door. All staff must have the training in place to assure that these standards are met and maintained at all cost. Should there be a slip up anywhere in the process, lives can be lost. A huge epidemic can start just from a contaminate exposed to the same air the rest of the hospital uses.

Should a disaster like that happen this is when OSHA and CDC (for Disease Control and Prevention) will step in and take over. Their only mission is to contain and control the leak. Public health is their number one and only concern. They are available 24/7. OSHA has gone as far as sending in fake employees to verify a complaint and watch the procedures in a hospital. If infractions are found the hospital can risk being shut down until everything is back up to code. This can take time as this will include a full inspection by a government official trained to spot a problem. Many hospitals keep an OSHA trained employee as part of their staff, who is trained to spot potential problems just to avoid any major problems from happening.
