Problems with power windows are common on most cars whether they are late model cars or of the older variety. Once you realize that you do have a problem with your power windows, you may be inclined to try to save money by doing the repairs on your own instead of bringing the car to a mechanic. In order to do this, it is vital that you have at least a basic understanding of how the power windows work in a vehicle. The process is not as difficult as you may think. The most difficult part of the job is actually being able to get at the small components that make up the power system in a window.

Power windows have two basic components - the regulator and the motor. Without both of these in good working order, the window will not come down or go up when you push the button. Wear and tear is the most common culprit in casing one or both of these to break down. Each time you push the button this puts stress on both the regulator and the motor. Another reason for the failure of the window to open or close is that there is a problem with the track.

The first thing you have to do when you start to repair the power window ...
... is to take the door panel apart. Just the prospect of this chore may send most vehicle owners to the nearest auto body shop for help, but the whole process takes less than an hour to complete. When you remove the door panel, you can do a visual inspection to make sure that the glass is not out of the track. The next step is to disconnect the wiring from the regulator. Then you can remove the window glass that slides into the track.

In most cases, the fault lies with the regulator. You can easily purchase the regulator you need at an auto parts supply store and if you are not sure which one you need, you can take the old one with you to the store. All you have to do to remove it from the door is to take out the bolts that secure it in place. When you start to replace the new regulator, you simply put it back in place and screw the bolts in place again.

You do have to reconnect the wiring in order for the power windows to work properly. If this is the first time you take such repairs upon yourself, you will want to take note of the wiring as you disconnect it and then use the reverse process when connecting it again. Now all you have to do is put the door panel back in place and you are ready to push the button to test how effective your repairs have been.
