There are several types of gadgets in which you have to use SD cards for data storage purposes. But, taking one off the shelf just like that would not be a wise idea as it may not later fit your gadget. This decision to buy an appropriate SD card cannot be taken solely on the basis of cost and capacity. If you miss some important aspects, the card may not work properly and could also cause your digital camera or phone to hang up! Just going for the required capacity would not determine the speed and performance of the SD card. There is high transfer speed required when you are dealing with SD cards. Read on to learn about other aspects needing attention while purchasing an SD card for your electronic devices.

Compatibility

Every device does not support the same SD or microSD card. There are cards available with varied capacity, including the SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. These are all different standards that are not supported by all the devices. For their proper working, they need to have appropriate support as these cards do not operate at the same voltage. To make sure which card would work best for your device, ...
... check the device manual that usually mentions about the types of SD cards your device supports. If a specific card type is not listed on the manual, prefer not to purchase it as the device might not support that high-capacity card.

Transfer Speed and Class

You would usually see a number mentioned in a circle on the front of an SD card that indicates this card’s minimum data transfer speed. This is termed as the class of the card. For example, a class 10 card means that there would be a speed of 10 Mbps on an SD card to DVD transfer or on a flash card to DVD transfer. The class 10 cards are a little faster than other SD cards but there are other factors operating behind it, which would not be somehow visible to the buyer. For the data transfer rate indication, there are spikes you would usually see on an SD card.

You might also see that some SD card packaging displays a number followed by the letter ‘x’. It also indicates speed of the SD card but comparative to an old speed rating on CD-ROMs. For example, a 56x speed card means that an SD card is 56 times faster than a base CD-ROM. Thus, higher the number mentioned on the card package, more is the speed for an SD card to DVD transfer or flash card to DVD transfer of data. So, it depends on the kind of device too if it requires more data transfer speed or can work on lesser speed. So, if the device manufacturer recommends a particular class of SD card, go for the same.

UHS Speed Class

Instead of a numbered class, some cards bear a big ‘U’ with a number mentioned in parentheses. It indicates ultra high speed and is used for some of the fastest cards available in the market. So, if your device manual recommends so, go for a UHS card.
