Bad breath or Halitosis as it is medically known can be a temporary problem or a chronic one for some people. In either form it might spell trouble for a relationship if it goes unnoticed or unchecked. It’s important to first determine whether you suffer from it; and if so, find a real remedy.
Halitosis is a very common problem faced by millions of people, many of whom are unaware of their condition. In many cases people are negligent about their oral hygiene and as a consequence suffer from the feared dragon breath. Others simply don’t know what to do about it so they ignore it and hope others do as well. Not a recommended approach.

Some common reasons for bad breath are; foods like garlic, onion and cabbage, smoking or drinking, poor oral hygiene, medical conditions like sinus or dry mouth (xerostomia), too much coffee, and the side effects of some medications. Even liver and kidney diseases are known to cause bad breath. Additionally, to avoid bad breath try to avoid sugary foods as they can become the feeding ground or starting point for odour causing bacteria in the mouth.

Include crunchy fruits ...
... and vegetables in your diet for over-all health as well as their ability to help reduce plaque formation. Some temporary remedies for halitosis include brushing one’s teeth, chewing gum, using a mint or even drinking a lot of water. Unfortunately those only work as cover ups at best. For a more permanent cure it is important to identify and rule out any underlying medical conditions.

There are some natural ways of fighting bad breath that may have merit. These include the use of cardamom, mint leaves, parsley, cinnamon and sunflower seeds in your diet or drinking them in your tea. Mixing water with lemon juice and gargling with it is also known to be effective. But the best way to keep bad breath away is to practice good oral hygiene using only products recommended by dental experts.

Good oral hygiene should focus on keeping bacteria off your tongue and teeth. The tongue is an area of the mouth that needs as much attention as the teeth. Clean your tongue regularly with a good tongue scraper or by brushing. Regular flossing ensures that plaque does not form between teeth. And don’t forget to schedule regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist for a professional cleaning at least twice per year or more as needed.

It’s important to follow a brushing-flossing-rinsing routine daily but be conscious about the effectiveness of the oral cleaning products that you use. Bad breath is the result of bacteria thriving in your mouth due to them feeding on food debris. They feed and produce sulfur compounds that are, as you might expect from the word root word sulphur, the source of bad breath. Dental problems like plaque, tartar, tooth decay and periodontal disease can all contribute to bad breath. All of which begs the question ; do you have the right oral health care products to help fight against bad breath?

Your toothpaste and rinse need to be more than just a cover-up to truly be effective. Ideally they should be preventive so the problem does not occur in the first place. Choose only sulfate-free anti-cavity fluoride toothpaste, alcohol-free oral rinses and quality mouthwashes. Use only a good toothbrush with soft bristles, and change frequently (every few months). Flossing after each meal is best but it not practical try to rinse vigorously with a quality mouthwash or at a minimum water to help break loose trapped food particles. And last but certainly not the least effective bad breath remedy is a good oral spray! Keep it handy in your pocket or purse for touch-ups between brushings.
