Brief Overview Of The Indian Ferro Alloys Industry

India is a leading producer of minerals, in the present times. Interestingly, the chronology of this success dates back the days of the East India Company. Way back in 1930, the historic trading organization constituted a Coal Committee. Such a body, thus, came into existence for the first time in the entire subcontinent. Gradually, a number of other committees were set up in sequence, with the motto of discovering other metals underneath the soil. Another landmark incidence occurred few years later, in 1851, with establishment of the Geological Survey of India (GSI). Mineral exploration on the Indian soil, in the modern times, thus received a substantial boost with this development.
A number of eminent geologists came to India with the setting up of the GSI. With the aim to adept the Indians in this field, the Company launched courses on geology in the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. In perfect sequence to a prolong process spanning over the millennium, mines were discovered in various parts of the country. The first mine that were discovered included those of,
a. Iron ore
...
... b. Manganese and
c. Chromite
The first Indian to hold a prominent office in the GSI was Pramatha Nath Bose, who later adorned the position of an advisor to Jamsetji Tata – the icon and the father figure of the Indian iron and steel industry. It was because of the former’s advice that the later decided to shift his proposed steel plant project from Bhilai to Jamshedpur. Indian ferro alloys thus have a long and proud history that most strikingly, reflects the history of the entire nation as well.
India’s economy has improved a lot in the last six decades, post independence. Industrial development has, so far, been stunning, if not just impressive alone. Nevertheless, there is still much room for development. Various industrial sectors are gradually spreading their roots deep into the Indian soil. IT industry, in particular, is the most happening corporate sectors in the country. In spite of all these latest developments in the corporate domain, the fraternity of ferro alloys supplier India still plays a prominent role in shaping up the nation’s economy.
Metallurgy and alloys
i. From the aspect of metallurgy, an alloy is the mixture of several metals.
ii. Alloys are generally found to possess enhanced properties, as compared to their constituent metals. Steel, for example an alloy of iron, is stronger than iron. Indian ferro alloys are formed when iron is mixed with other metals, like silica.
iii. Certain physical properties like, density, Young's Modulus, and thermal conductivity, etc. are generally not seen to vary greatly in case of the alloys, as compared to their respective constituent metals.
iv. As as striking difference, tensile strength of alloys varies greatly, with their respective constituents. As such, this aspect contributes to enhanced properties of the alloys.
The commercial precinct of ferro alloys supplier India contributes a hefty amount to the public coffers in a regular manner. According to the estimation of the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers’ Association (IFAPA) - the apex body representing the entire industry – the country possesses a stunning capacity of 5.15 Million Tonnes of ferro alloy production.
Bilal Muktinathn is the author of this article. He has worked in the manufacturing field for more than four decades. He has written several journals on ferro alloys in india for the last few years. He has stated the change in the Ferro Alloys production with the increase in ferro alloys supplier india.
