How To Properly Insulate Your Log Home

Log homes are rustic and beautiful. But because of absence of framed walls, it may be difficult to install insulation in them. Therefore, keeping the heat trapped can be a problem. With these pre and post construction works and by using insulating log home kits, you can properly insulate your log home.
Chinking and caulking
Logs ideally have spaces or gaps between them. These gaps force heat transfer and loss of cooling or heating. But with chinking, you can fill these gaps, stop the draft and eliminate the opportunity of heat loss. If you are building a log home, make sure you have log cabin kits with chinking that can be stripped as insulation between logs. Caulking can be used to prevent any chinking cracks and left over gaps. Remember to choose good sealant or else you might have to deal with the problem of peeling and dirty looking logs.
Use heating ducts
Heating ducts can be used in the areas where other insulation options are unable. Heating ducts primarily made from vinyl or foil backed fibreglass must be used as they are affordable and last long. To use them, coat any air leaks with silicone ...
... caulk and then install and secure heating ducts with duct tape.
Using caulk on the windows
As mentioned earlier, log home kits come with chinking and caulking material that can help insulate a log home. Use caulking to seal the gaps in windows. This will reduce heat transfer and keep cold air out. Caulking will also help in reducing moisture content and humidity.
Installation sheets
For insulating roof or open ceiling with beam frames, opt for installation sheets. Using these sheets will eliminate heat transfer and moisture absorption by the logs. Make sure that you use fibreglass sheets for the purpose. These sheets are a part of a number of log cabin kits. Similarly, use fibreglass insulators in areas like attic floor. Commonly R-Value insulation is used for these purposes.
Insulating from the inside
Call a professional for insulating your log home from the inside. For this purpose, a wall inside log wall is create with vapour barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the logs and prevents heat loss.
Urethane Foam
Over the years, urethane foam is supplied with log home kits to support insulation. This foam is majorly used for insulating the roof. Urethane foam not just improves the stability of roof; it also insulates and adds a rustic touch to log cabins.
Radiant floor heating systems
Radiant floor heating systems are used in several log homes to distribute heat evenly across the home. But you have to customize your log cabin kits by asking your manufacturer to supply these systems at an additional cost. Masonry heaters can be installed for slow and steady heating of the log home. Geothermal heat pumps can be installed for water heating.
Generally, insulating log homes isn’t a costly affair if done during the construction itself. Since wood has high thermal mass, therefore, once the house is heated it won’t cool easily.
