Everyone who wants to redecorate any area in their home will be on the lookout for innovative and new materials and products. Some materials are such that they gain in popularity and then fade out when new ones are launched. Cork is one such material. It was widely used centuries ago, in homes and in public spaces and then for some reason, it disappeared into the shadows for a large part of the latter half of the 20th century. However, this material now rules the roost and is one that has taken the designing market by storm. Cork is a naturally occurring material and is available in various forms and used in different applications.

Cork tiles are used to clad walls and for floors as well. There was a time when cork was seen only as a material used for corking champagne and wine bottles. It was also considered to be bulletin board material. Today, it is used for all this and more. It is attractive, natural, has insulation properties, is moisture-proof and has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It does not dent easily and is easy to install. Though it cannot be considered to be an economy product, it is not an ...
... excessively expensive one. Cork glue down tile floors that have been installed and sealed-off well will last for several decades.

Today, this material is chosen for its environment friendly properties and beauty. It is specifically great for homes that have children or pets as it repels dust and moisture and keeps fungus at bay. Cork glue down tile floors are commonly used in commercial spaces such as gyms and recording studios. In a gym it provides the necessary cushioning that is a must for any exercise space, is comfortable to lie down on and has just the right amount of bounce in it to cushion the feet.

Apart from exercise and recreation zones, cork tiles make excellent flooring in childrens nurseries. Small children tend to tumble and fall and cork cushions the impact. Its hypoallergenic properties make it the perfect option to use in indoor spaces where children are going to be moving around and playing. Cork is not always brown in color. It is available in shades of red, white, blue, black, gray, green and yellow. This means it will match any kind of décor. Wall tiles made of cork can be used in offices and children’s rooms and serve as insulation as well as a pin-up board.

It springs back into place and the pin holes do not leave a permanent indentation. Since it has natural anti-fungal properties, no chemical additives are required. This means that chemical fumes are not something you have to be worried about. Cork is as safe for you as it is for the environment. This long-lasting material needs no special care except maybe, regular maintenance, vacuuming and the occasional damp mop. Never use any harsh floor cleaners on it. Neither is it necessary nor is it advisable. The simplicity and versatility of cork are its biggest positives.
