Community Join Hands To Address Water Damage Yonkers

During times of calamities, the natural goodness in people will make itself evident. A good example was the clean-up process after the 2007 storm that left the City of Yonkers flooded. Federal, state and local officials joined hands with the people to address the aftermath of the flood and restore the community back from water damage Yonkers.
Local officials prioritized the recovery of major roadways and local streets to get traffic moving and allow restoration crews to work with residents and pump out water from flooded homes and help them recover from water damage Yonkers. Immediate contingency actions were initiated by the city Mayor, Commissioners and Department Heads to provide assistance to affected families displaced by the floods. The Cola Center in North Broadway was transformed into an Emergency Shelter, equipped with cots, personnel and food for those who were in need. A remarkable agency was the Office for the Aging, which provided transportation services and vans to take needful residents to the Cola Center from anywhere within the City.
While the Cola Center was taking in residents, crews continued ...
... their efforts to remove water from the streets and from the homes to minimize water damage Yonkers. Officials were also on the prowl, knocking on doors to check if residents are in need of some assistance. It took several days for the electricity to go back up, as the waters slowly subsided from the neighborhoods. The City government also assigned 24-hour police presence throughout the city to protect constituents while restoration work was underway.
As part of the disaster declaration that President Bush issued for the State of New York, the Federal Emergency Management Agency made funds available for the residents of Yonkers to provide aid and assistance from losses and expenses caused by water damage Yonkers. Mayor Phil Amicone encouraged residents to avail of these relief packages, particularly for those who were severely affected and those who lost everything. People eligible for the funds applied by phone or online. All they needed for application was their Social Security Numbers and if they have insurance, their Private Insurance information. They also needed to provide contact information and directions to their affected homes.
As restoration work was underway to address water damage Yonkers, local volunteers stepped up to assist people in communities with their clean-up work. One good example was the cleanup at the Brooklands Apartments Building where various apartment units were completely destroyed by water damage Yonkers. Volunteers and students from Bronxville and Eastchester High Schools pitched in during the cleanup job. They ware later joined by Mayor Amicone. Efforts were focused in assisting senior residents in lifting goods and other damaged items from these homes that are too heavy to be lifted alone.
Another major problem that residents had to contend with was problems in restoring electricity to their homes and buildings due to severe water damage Yonkers. The City officials, in coordination with building managers and property owners, worked with the Con Edison Company in restoring electricity and gas services to these affected homes. Con Edison crews supervised the restoration efforts with safety as the top priority. The City provided generators for temporary use while restoration work was underway.
With the coordinated efforts, the City of Yonkers was restored back to normal status, thanks to the sacrifice of City and community leaders and members. It was a truly remarkable group effort with similarly remarkable results.
