Not sure what an EKG technician is? An EKG technician uses a medical device called an electrocardiogram to perform check the patient’s heart. The machine is attached to the patient by means of electrodes which report the electrical activity of the heart to the machine. An EKG can detect potentially life-threatening problems with a patient’s heartbeat including; arterial fibrillation and arrhythmia. An EKG technician learns not only how to connect a patient to the device and administer the test but also how to set-up and properly maintain the equipment.

... are not a common option while learning in a formal training program is.

Some EKG techs choose to earn an associates degree from either a four year or community college before obtaining a certification through a dedicated training program. College is not a requirement for seeking certification but earning 2 year degree before becoming certified can lead to more money down the road and greater career opportunities.

The job forecast for EKG techs is stable and is expected to continue growing at an average rate. This is good because so long as there is continued need for new technicians every year there will more than likely be jobs for trained and experience professionals. Average salaries for EKG Techs are like most other professions in that they vary from location to location with higher salaries for big cities than small towns and rural communities. The mid-range of salaries across the country is between $40,000 and $50,000 per year.

The work environment you work in is a matter of choice in most cases since EKG technicians are employed in a number of different places including hospitals, cardiology clinics and cardiologist’s offices, emergency rooms and acute care centers and cardiac rehabilitation centers.

Regardless of which environment you choose to work in being an EKG tech is a rewarding position that can be stressful because the patients you are dealing with are often in a life endangering condition and may have just had or are in the midst of a heart attack or angina. These situations require a professional attitude and cool character to deal with the job at hand while the patient and likely family members are in a state of panic.
