One of the greatest views of nature are seen camping and hiking through bear country. However, the threat of being attacked by a bear is great and it is imperative that hikers are prepared. Preventing bear attacks is a much better strategy than trying to defend yourself once an agitated bear attacks. By understanding the basic territory where you will be camping or hiking, you can do your best to prevent a bear attack.

Always arm yourself with either bear spray of a firearm to defend yourself should a bear attack. It might take more than one bullet to successfully ward off a fatal bear attack so be prepared. However, by taking steps to prevent close contact with a bear, you should be able to enjoy your outdoor adventure without needing to use weaponry against bears.

When hiking, travel in pairs. Studies have shown that bears are more prone to attack those who are by themselves and in secluded areas. Most bears attack after being surprised, so make plenty of noise. This will scare bears away from the area where you are located and is one of the best ways to prevent an attack. Also, when camping, keep your ...
... food at least 100 feet away from your campsite. Hanging your gear in a tree at least 12 feet off of the ground is the best method.

Should you encounter a bear, be prepared to use your weapons. If you don't have any weapons, you'll need to use other strategies. If you have food with you, try to divert the bear by throwing food in the opposite direction. Never run or scream as this will startle the bear and may cause it to charge at you. If the bear attacks you, assume the fetal position by curling up in a ball. Protect your abdomen and chest and if you have a backpack, keep it on. Play dead as the bear might possibly become bored, feel that you are harmless, and leave you alone.
