Cheap travel options, including cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages can be taken advantage of to reach some very attractive tourist destinations that are unknown to most tourists.

The following are recommendations from Frommer’s Travel of underrated tourist attractions that have as much to offer or more than some of their better known peers with far less crowds:

• Big Bend Ranch State Park in Texas attracts only a few thousand people a year. Its highlights include a massive volcanic extrusion known as El Solitario and a very impressive stretch of the Rio Grande. Overnight lodging and camping are available deep in the park’s interior, referred to as “The Texas Outback.”

• Buffalo Bill Historic Center in Cody, WY showcases the life and times of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. The facility is near Yellowstone National Park and includes galleries dedicated to Native American history, the regional ecosystem and firearms, as well as a collection of Western art regarded as one of the best anywhere.

... a very different view of the city by wandering its open spaces, hallways, ramps, and food courts. Guests are encouraged to gaze up at its impressive “constellation” ceiling, enjoy fresh oysters at its famed Oyster Bar, enjoy a drink at the posh Campbell Apartment, and even shop for groceries at its gourmet food court.

• Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, appeals to far more than just country music fans. Its vast collections include everything from Mother Maybelle Carter’s guitar to the set of the TV show Hee Haw. Platinum tickets provide a guided tour of the nearby RCA Studio B, where Elvis Presley recorded his first official album.

• Hovenweep National Monument straddles the Utah Colorado border and is an ideal spot to dig into the history of the Ancestral Peuboloans who populated the American Southwest a millennium ago.

• The Schindler House in West Hollywood, CA is one of America’s first modern homes, designed by minimalist architect Rudolph Schindler in 1922. A series of concrete slabs create two interlocking apartments. It is a perfect place to contemplate the sublime vs. the glitz of Hollywood.

• Isle Royale National Park in Michigan is the largest island in the Great Lakes and the least visited national park in the contiguous 48 states. This park appeals to boaters, campers and hikers with its solitary shores. Its closed ecosystem is unique and home to moose and wolves.
