5 Common Skin Care Myths
Myth #1: Washing your face with a mild soap is good for sensitive skin.
As a young child growing up in the West Indies, my mom used to bring home a soap known to everyone as blue soap. This soap was used for the family's cleansing regimen, and when it was time to hand wash the family's laundry, then my mom would switch to a brown soap. That is how it was for me as a child living at home until my family migrated to the U.S.
Soaps have come a long way since my childhood days of using ‘blue soap' on my face. And although there are low foaming soaps that are formulated for sensitive skin, the use of soaps as a facial cleanser can strip your delicate skin of its natural acid mantle. Your skin is then exposed to environmental harness which can lead to breakouts and dryness.
Because the face is exposed to everything the environment throws at it, the best way to clean and protect your skin is with ph-balanced cleansers that are soap and sulfate free. Try any of our soap and sulfate free cleansers formulated with plant saponins and energizing plant extract that offer a refreshing alternatives to traditional ...
... cleansers.
Myth #2: Acne is caused when you don't clean your skin properly
While it is important to practice proper daily cleansing to remove dirt and surface oils from your skin, an unclean face -- while it is a contributing factor is not the problem. People with oily skin are more prone to breakouts than any other skin type. The sebaceous glands are responsible for producing the oils that causes your beautiful face to shine, and your pores can sometimes become clogged from dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin. Not washing your face creates a haven for bacteria, and for the oily, acne skin sufferer this is one of the worst thing you can do to your skin. Your skin is the largest organ on your body which, in addition to those oil-producing sebaceous glands, houses the hair which grows through your pores. When the skin is not properly clean, bacteria begins to form within your hair follicles. The oils produced by your sebaceous glands, and the accumulation of dead skin cells can lead to your pores become clogged. Before you know it acne begins to develop and blackheads are formed.
Pore Clearing Cleanser, Camphor Pore Minimizing Masque and Camphor Blend Exfoliating Gel are some of the many excellent products Joy Lorraine offers to help keep bacteria in check and control break-outs before they become a problem.
Myth #3: Wearing Makeup breaks you out.
There's no need for women who wear makeup to develop a love-hate relationship with it. Every makeup wearer -- be it heavy or light, should remove their makeup with a good cleanser that will effectively clean their skin by removing every trace of makeup before going to bed at night. If you wear any makeup, consider using our gentle foaming Pure & Simple Cleansing Lotion formulated as a facial cleanser, astringent and makeup remover all-in one.
Wearing makeup enhances the beauty of all women, and I certainly enjoy enhancing all of my beautiful features. At night however, all of my makeup is removed before retiring for the night.
Myth #4: Since I'm oily I don't need a moisturizer
Everyone needs to moisturize regardless of their skin type. Balance is the key to keeping your skin properly hydrated, not drying it out. Having oily skin is not a bad thing but rather it is how your skin functions. Not moisturizing your skin will only cause the sebaceous glands to produce excess oils to compensate for the lack of hydration. This over production of oils will certainly contribute to acne because the oil becomes trapped beneath the skin. What you want from any moisturizer is one that will hydrate the skin without adding any additional oils. Many moisturizers feel good upon application but rapidly evaporate from the skin. A good moisturizer will keep your skin properly hydrated and last throughout the day. Our Oil-Free Hydrating Fluid and Stress Recovery Lotion are great for oily skin. Both are oil and fragrance free.
Myth #5: Sticking to one brand for all your skin care needs
Of course every company would like for you to use their brand for all your skin care needs, but product ingredients can sometimes cause an adverse reaction to sensitive skin types. Because every skin is different, we offer products for all skin types without the added known sensitizers such as sodium laurel or laureth sulfates, mineral oil, bovine-sourced ingredients, lanolin or propylene glycol commonly used in many skin care products today.
