Choosing A Sailing Course That Suits You
One of the most rewarding skills you can possess is sailing. This phenomenon is a massive part of history especially in the UK and is one of the most exhilarating. The freedom you get from sailing is almost unrivalled as you feel liberated from the world and have that feeling of being in total control. For many of us you can liken the experience to driving, however until you experience it and learn to sail you will never realise just how rewarding sailing is as a skill.
If sailing is a hobby you are thinking of taking up then it is important that you choose the right company and the right sailing course. There are many companies out there that offer sailing courses and the following are a few things to look out for when choosing sailing course
Location:
This may seem obvious however some sailing companies operate in totally different locations to where you first contact them. o you don't want to assume that your sailing course is in Blackpool when it is really in Poole!
Also some sailing courses are offered as part of a sailing holiday which could be ...
... anywhere abroad. Sailing holidays offer a totally different experience to learning in the off-shores of northern England so it is worth checking these out if you want a bit more of an adventure.
Safety:
Safety on the water is of utmost importance. Make sure your safety is ensured and that correct procedures are in place. The school should hold first aid certificates and provide you with the correct clothing for your safety. They should also run through with you all safety issues before you set sail.
Fully Licensed:
This is very important. Check to see if your sailing school has the right credentials. This means that they are RYA Certified and that the course is RYA approved. Do not hesitate to ask this when enquiring sailing legitimate sailing schools are more than happy to provide such information.
Regularly maintained boats and quality checks:
All boats should work to their absolute best and be regularly checked to prevent and failures and hazards.
Extra:
Such as life vests. You may get a cheap deal however the cost can mount up as you have to buy your own life jackets etc. Good sailing courses will provide you with these and so always check first. Also do not rush out and buy your own sailing equipment until you check first!
Cost:
More expensive does not necessarily mean better; and moreover cheaper does not always mean better. Cost should not be the be all and end all (unless someone is charging way too much). Think about what you get for your money and what you are actually going to learn. Some sailing courses are cheaper however you get very small amounts of time sailing. So make sure you are clear and always check. This way you are better comparing companies.
Hours:
How many hours of learning you will receive are important to know. You don't want to pay for a course thinking the whole time is going to be on the water so make sure you double check first.
These are just a few points to help you choose sailing courses that suit you. There are many schools out there each unique in their offerings. By shopping around and asking the right questions you can be well on your way to taking part in one of the best experiences of your life.
