If the knot is on the right side of the apron, it means that the woman is married, engaged or committed while a knot on the left side indicates that she is single. And if the knot is at the back side, it means she is a widow. But the apron which was a practical outfit used for different sort of activities like storing scissors or gathering berries etc., has now become a fun accessory.

Dirndls are made for flattering ladies, having a tight waist and bodice in order to emphasize their figure and a full length skirt for covering flaws. In modern time, dirndl holds the similar significance as kilt that shows the national pride of the wearer. These dresses worked for the traditional or cultural events, weddings or any formal occasion. Today they are known due to their appearance at Oktoberfest, a grand festival that is celebrated in southern Germany which attracts people from all over world.
