Henna or mehndi has a strong significance in Indian weddings. There is a separate celebration for it which also involves music, dance and sweets etc. A whole evening is spend for the henna ceremony. It actually kick starts the wedding festivities.

Ideally mehndi celebration are scheduled just two nights before the wedding. It commemorates the marriage feel with traditional henna designs applied on hands and feet of the bride. Earlier even the groom used to apply henna but gradually that tradition has faded off.

Modish men prefer other accessories over henna. At times to mark the tradition they just put a small design and don't cover the entire palm. Mehndi artists are specially called for the 'Mehndi Ceremony'. They apply henna designs to the bride and other ladies of the family.

Mainly it is a ladies function with lots of fun, music and dance. The auspicious relevance of henna relates its colour with love. It is said that the darkness of the colour symbolise the depth of groom's love for the bride. So, Indian brides crave for dark henna colour.

Mehndi paste is made with dry henna powder, curd, ...
... tea syrup and lemon to lend dark brown colour. Applied on both hands and feet of the bride, the designs are simply awe inspiring. Kept overnight the henna is washed without soap to retain long lasting colour.

At times the design blends groom's name in it. It is so beautifully jelled with the main design that the groom can hardly find it. Bride and Groom wear simple bright coloured clothes for the Mehndi night bash. With least make up they enjoy the singing, dancing and music during the function.

Relatives and friends sing, dance and play songs about the culture of henna. Earlier ladies used to sing songs relevant to the occasion while these days Bollywood music envelops the whole scene. The home is decorated with flowers. Red and yellow colour decorations dominate the scene.

The evening celebration stretches till late night. Henna application is followed by a light dinner. It is a merrymaking time with feasts and sweets at the end. Lovely to the core, the mehndi function becomes an exquisite party time.

Indian weddings in Australia also pump up this eulogising time prior to the wedding. There are renowned henna artists in Melbourne who claim exceptional design services. All one has to do is find a pro artist and enjoy this traditional and festive wedding time!
