Basing on the self-discharge and common overheating issues, storage of a laptop battery becomes extremely important. General speaking, lithium batteries can be charged 300-500 times in a life cycle. However, all of them will degrade over time and ultimately die. What we can do is to slow down the process of degradtion. Quite often, Proper use, storage techniques can prolong your battery life. Then, what will the proper way to store your laptop battery? Here we will share some effective practises for you.

At first, we must know that extreme condition is regarded as the worst killerof laptop battery, especially the high temperatures inside or outside modern laptops. Of course, too low temperatures will also cause damage to the battery. In other words, only suitable temperatures can keep the battery in good health.
For all chemistry's (lithium and Nickel based laptop batteries), the ideal storage temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius (around 59 degrees Fahrenheit). To sum up, only the following practise are available for you:
1. Try to avoid charging the battery while you are working with the laptop because ...
... this practise will increase your laptop's temperature
2. never leave your laptop in the trunk of your car when it is either freezing out or in the middle of a hot summer day. Both the cold and hot environment will drain a battery completely.
3. It is advisable to store the battery in a dry, clean, cool place away from heat and metal objects since these matters like moisture or water will cause a short-circuit issue for your battery.

Due to the self-discharge, keep in mind to store the battery at about 40% state-of-charge. Generally, below 6 degrees Celsius, lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery will be a month of self-discharge, 5%, and the ideal way to preserve, is in the 40% charge after cold storage, you can save up to 5-10 years. Fuither, avoid to store them at either full or zero capacity, which is a common mistake for battery maintainence. It's said that storing a battery at between 40-60% charge capacity will slow down the battery degradation and prolongs its life significantly.

On the other hand, let the battery warm up a little before you put it back into your laptop. If the temperature is raised too fast, it will strain the battery. At the same time, clean it periodically when your laptop is off, then remove it to store.
