What You Need To Know About Carbon Fiber
Carbon fiber is a new variety of super strong material that is also lightweight. It is five times as strong as steel and two times as stiff, yet it only weighs about two-thirds less. Carbon fibre is just thin strands of carbon, even thinner than human hair. These strands can be braided or twisted together just like yarn.
There process of manufacturing carbon fiber is composed of two parts, the chemical and the mechanical aspects. When carbon fiber is being produced, high temperature is used to heat up the fiber strands which came out of the material. Exposure to oxygen must be avoided when producing carbon fiber because if not, it will get burned. When the heating process is over, the process of carbonization follows. Numerous industries and businesses have tried their best to mass-produce it but none of them succeeded in doing so. The reason for this is that there are not so many skilled workers who are capable of doing it and the demand for such material isn’t that great. The cost for this procedure is also very high and this led many manufacturers to back out on it.
When carbon fibers are being processed, ...
... there’s a possibility for some of them to get ripped off. Once this happens, they will scatter in the air and if you are able to inhale them, this can be detrimental to your health. Because of this, individuals in the work area should always wear masks for their protection. Aside from getting inhaled and causing health problems, the skin can also suffer from irritation because of the materials used in coating fibers. Due to this reason, it is necessary to wear extra clothing and apply skin protection creams in places where there is carbon dust. Moreover, carbon fibers are great electricity conductors. The dust coming from carbon can make electrical equipment experience shorts and arcing. Usually, electrical materials are not placed in areas that are carbon-dust infested. Instead, they’re placed in sealed cabinets or other safe enclosures.
Most of the time, carbon fiber is integrated in bicycles, cars, boats, planes with good quality and formula one race cars. Aside from that, it can also be utilized in musical instruments, general entertainment, general aviation interiors and marine adornments. It is a well-known fact that steel is the main material that is used in airplanes, boats and cars. However, if we change that material to carbon fiber, these vehicles will weigh 60% less. The weight reduction in them can also minimize their fuel consumption for up to 30%. Through the use of carbon fiber, manufacturers can now produce vehicles with better engines and are smaller in size.
The number one factor that makes carbon fiber better than all the others are the components that it’s made of. Some of its great qualities include; durability, resistance to corrosion, high tensile strength, low thermal expansion and radiolucency which makes it ideal for medical equipments.
The downside about these fibers, is when they are compressed, exposed to high impact and pushed beyond its capabilities they will break. It will crack if hit by a hammer. The relative cost of these materials is high. While some prices may have dropped in the past years, demand has not increased enough to produce more supplies. So expect that in the near future, prices for carbon fiber will likely remain the same.
