The Journey So Far - Pune Warriors
It looks like Pune Warriors is on fire this Indian Premier League season. True, they didn’t exactly have the best of starts this season and in general, having suffered crushing blows in the hands of Kings XI Punjab and more devastatingly with the newly formed franchise of Sunrisers Hyderabad but it looks like the they have stopped fate on its tracks with a victory against Rajasthan Royals and quite recently, by beating Chennai Super kings by twenty four runs or so. Now they have their sights set on beating the pulp out of Sunrisers Hyderabad. While we await the results, let us take a look at Pune Warriors journey through the course of Indian Premier League so far.
• Pune warriors is one of the franchise that hails from the state of Maharashtra; the other one being Mumbai Indians.
• It came to being in 2011 along with the now disbanded team- Kochi Tuskers.
• The team is owned by Sahara Adventure Sports Limited, which is a part of Sahara India Pariwar, which sponsors the Indian cricket team.
• The current captain of the cricket team is Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan All Rounder.
• ...
... The Pune Warriors news just about covers two seasons so far without including the current season.
• They started off with a bang, bringing in top internationally acclaimed cricket players such as Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa, Jesse Ryder, Angelo Mathews, Graeme Smith Mitchell Marsh, Callum Ferguson, Wayne Parnell etc.
• They won only four matches in their debut season and came in second last in the tournament.
• Their main sponsor Sahara withdrew Pune Warriors India from the IPL just before the 2012 IPL auction.
• Their next blow came in the form of Yuvraj’s withdrawal from the team to take treatment for germ cell cancer.
• With Yuvraj out of the picture, Saurav Ganguly was appointed as the team captain. Half way through the tournament, Ganguly was dropped and Michael Clarke assumed the new skipper position.
• Even this did not turn their luck around as they finished the season with 12 losses and just four victories.
• With Ganguly retiring from all forms of cricket and Clarke recuperating from injuries, the team was left without a shepherd and that’s when Angelo Mathews took over the captaincy.
• One will have to wait for the IPL updates to learn about the latest developments concerning the team.
