Companies that manufacture or distribute products need places to store their inventory. Many companies use warehouses to store their products. Most products are placed on wooden pallets and completely wrapped in plastic to keep it secure. Then it is placed on industrial shelving units, sometimes numerous shelves high, with the use of forklift trucks.

A fork lift truck is a motorized vehicle with two “forks” on the front that is able to lift large amounts of heavy inventory easily. The forks have the ability to move up and down or side to side, allowing the driver to easily move a pallet full of inventory. The forks slip right into the spaces under the pallet so the driver can lift it off the ground and place it where it needs to be.

Fork trucks come with several power options: electric, diesel, LPG or petrol. Electric models are rechargeable. They do not emit emissions so there are no fumes to inhale in closed areas making them more environmentally friendly. Electric powered units should be plugged in after every shift so the charge is fresh for the next user. Running out of a charge can stop work very quickly.

... LPG and petrol powered forklift trucks have an internal combustion (IC) engine much like your car. These do emit emissions so it is better to use them outside or in well ventilated areas. The advantage to using an internal combustion fork truck is there is virtually no down time. If it runs out of fuel, simply refill it. There’s no waiting for it to charge.

Some models are for light weight lifting. That is, if you consider one to five tonnes light weight. Other fork trucks can handle a much heavier load. The bigger units can manage between five and fifty-two tonnes. These are better suited for heavy industrial, logging, ports and mining jobs.

Most fork lift trucks are counter balanced. This means that the truck itself is heavy enough to handle the approved load capacity without tipping over. That’s not to say that it cannot happen. The driver has to view the load being carried and the truck as one unit. He/She has to be careful to carry the load in a balanced manner in order to ensure safety.

Many fork trucks can be fitted with attachments to help you safely accomplish your task. Rotators allow 360° rotation of the forks, which makes it easy to tip and dump loads. Fork slippers extend the length of the forks, and safety cages allow someone to safely reach high up areas.
