Handling Your App's Negative Publicity
Just like a high-profile celebrity or business, your app is susceptible to critics and negative publicity. Upon its release (even prior to it), your app can come under intense scrutiny from critics and disgruntled customers alike. Negative publicity can have a devastating impact on your app, to the point of even affecting the reputation of your mobile enterprise. It is one thing to have one of your apps tank, but when your entire business begins to suffer because of it, the matter becomes a serious concern. Negative publicity is not easy to handle, but it certainly can, and should, be taken care of. Here are a few ideas to help you better handle, and subsequently avoid negative publicity for your mobile app.
Negating Negative Criticism With Positive Publicity
Likely the best way to fight back against negative publicity is to get your app featured in a more positive light. This means that if a negative review comes out on a tech blog, your PR team should immediately work on finding a print publication, or new media outlet to feature your app in a positive and juxtaposed position. In doing so, you will show prospective ...
... users that your app is not entirely as critics say, and that they may have to try it out in order to gain their own opinion.
No Action Is The Best Reaction
Sometimes not reacting to harsh criticism of your work is the best action to take. It may take patience and calmness, but letting negative publicity go is often the easiest way to get past it. Negative reviews and other publicity written about your app are bound to happen. Truth be told, some critics get immense joy out of bashing someone else's hard work. So, instead of letting the critics get a rise out of you — which could result in an overreaction and additional bad press — you should simply let it go and focus on one of the positive reviews.
Point Out The Positive
Bad reviews are hard to hide from the public. For such reason, you really should not even try to do so, but what you can do, is avert the public’s attention to a more positive piece of publicity for your app. Lets say your app was featured in a tech magazine as one of the “Apps Most Likely To Fail In 2013.” As bad as the title of the article sounds, and the fact that your app was mentioned in it is even worse, you have the option to fight back if you so choose. What’s more, if you feel the article unjustifiably featured your app (and you should), then issue a press release pointing out something positive about your app. It could be a different article mentioning the potential your app has, or merely a new update you are releasing for your app that fixes the negative elements mentioned in the article. For every bad thing that is said about your app, there is at least one good thing you can point out to the public.
Conclusion
Handling bad press for your mobile app is not unlike any other type of negative publicity. It can all be negated in a way that is equally accountable and accurate. In doing so, it is the job of your mobile enterprise to make sure the public properly perceives your app in a positive light. The trick is to point out the good while overshadowing the negative parts of your app.
