Corporations as well as smaller businesses can be just as diverse as any other aspect of American society. Due to the differences in size and culture, it can lead many people, including app users to see the mobile offerings that businesses offer as variable depending on company stature. And while larger companies certainly have bigger budgets for their app projects, that does not necessarily mean they will produce better mobile offerings. In reality, big business apps are largely different than small enterprise apps.

Are All Apps Created Equal?

While all apps certainly are not created equal, the size of a company does not necessary have bearing on the success of an app. There are plenty examples of best selling apps that are created by smaller companies and independent developers. In fact, many times it is these small enterprises that create the most popular apps, especially in the gaming and functional categories. So, if you are apart of a small enterprise, have faith that you can create an app just as well crafted, if not more so, than that of a large corporation. In fact, many independent developers do just ...
... that. For instance, you may have heard Nick D’Aloisio’s remarkable story. The 17-year-old app developer just sold his Summly reading app to Yahoo for a large undisclosed amount, and has subsequently started working at the corporation’s London office. This is after his talents sparked interest from notable investors like Ashton Kutcher and Yoko Ono.

So, as you can see, it is the large corporations that usually latch onto smaller and more specialized talent in the industry to design their own mobile offerings. Furthermore, often times the reason that larger Fortune 500 companies have popular apps is because they already have a vast customer-base that consequently wants to access the company’s products or services via a mobile app, and the only way that is possible is if they have industry talent.

The Difference Is...

Besides the obvious size discrepancy between a small mobile app enterprise, and a large Fortune 500 company with an app, is that they are primarily in different industries. Say, for example, you have a small enterprise that creates a few apps each year. What’s more, your business is making and profiting off of the apps you offer. Most Fortune 500 companies, on the other hand, are in an entirely different industry, but just happen to have one foot in the mobile app industry to offer customers a convenient mobile offering.

Take for instance — Target — the company is in the retail industry yet it has an app to sell its products that users can download, and most generally enjoy. However, if you are a small enterprise app designer, and you subsequently compare your mobile offerings with that of Target's, you likely wouldn't associate them together. It is like comparing an avocado to an apple — they are both fruit, but definitely do not taste the same, and are eaten differently.

The Point Is...

If you are a small app enterprise, don't try to mold your mobile offerings after a Fortune 500 company. While people may like to eat both apples and avocados, seldom do they consume them together. So, just stick to your own brand of mobile app and work on target marketing the demographics that buy and enjoy using them. That is what is going to make your apps, and business as a whole, successful and profitable.
