If your enterprise has not yet used a QR code for marketing purposes it may be something to look into. QR codes (sort for Quick Response codes) are a way for customers to shortcut their way to a specific web page or mobile application. More specifically, these are used complimentary to mobile devices for users to scan with the camera feature. Then, based on the company and the given QR code, the user is redirected using metadata based on the information provided. While using these is a simple and easy way for your enterprise to provide users a convenient method of accessing promotions, as well as your mobile app, there are a few things you should know before jumping on the QR code bandwagon.

Uses For QR Codes

The uses are so abundant they are useful to practically any enterprise — mobile or otherwise. Whether you have an e-commerce business or simply need to relay an important URL to users, these can do it all at an expedited pace. They are commonly used for:

* Web stores
* URLs
* Storing personal banking information
* Logging-in to websites
* Shortcuts for promotion purposes

For ...
... companies with web stores, these offer a fast track for users to access your products or services with a mobile device. Similarly, users can also access specific URLs without having to do any typing, thanks to a QR code. If you are a financial organization, you can also provide these for your customers to access their banking information or login to a secure server on your web site. Lastly, and perhaps most frequently, Quick Response codes are used as part of a promotional ad that allows users to access a URL or web store.

Operating Systems

Depending on the operating system(s) that your app is compatible with, users may have an easier time accessing your Quick Response codes. Regardless of the operating system that someone is using, they will still be able to access your QR code, it just may take a few extra initial steps. For instance, iOS users may have to download an app for their device's camera to read them. This is primarily because QR technology is simply not native to the Apple mobile operating system. And while it may take some extra work at first, users will still be glad to know their devices can still access your information. Due to the extra steps required for iOS users, you may also want to make sure your app is compatible with Android and other mobile operating systems, as those users will have an easier time accessing your Quick Response codes and may be more likely to use them.

Recent Statistics

If the aforementioned information is not sufficient enough to sell you on Quick Response codes, then perhaps a few stats will. One study in June of 2011 found that over 14 million users accessed QR codes on their mobile devices. Of those, the majority were males over the age of 18 and under the age of 35. What's more, the predominant amount of QR scans came from a mobile user's home, while the second most were performed at retail stores. For retail businesses this means these are a predominantly effective method of enticing customers with discounts and other promotional information.

These are important stats to consider regardless of your industry. If you are looking to target market any of the aforementioned users, or even those not mentioned in the study, these may be something you want to consider using.
