Why And How To Get An Rya Level 2
Level 1 introduces you to sailing and getting afloat with supervision. No previous knowledge is required and the course only lasts for 2 days. You need to be 16 or over in order to undertake this though. The course covers how to sail in all directions, as well as awareness of launching and recovery. After you have completed it, you will be able to sail in light winds under supervision and be able to progress to RYA Level 2 should you so wish.
Level 2 sets the foundations of sailing and you will need to be 16 or over and have completed Level 1 in order to do this. The course lasts for 2 days, but is usually integrated with Level 1 into a 4 or 5 day course. The course includes rigging, launching, and sailing, plus capsize recovery and important safety knowledge is also taught. After the course, you will be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.
Once you have completed levels 1 and 2, you have the option to progress to Level 3. This involves all of the skills that you have previously learnt and also trying some new ones. It lasts for 2 days, and as with the other courses, you will need to be at least 16 ...
... years of age. The course includes a variety of level 1 and 2 skills, as well as taster sessions from the more advanced modules. Upon completion, you will be much more confident in your sailing skills and be able to go onto more advanced learning if you wish to.
There are all sorts of types of courses available, such as navigation, special short courses, dinghy, motor cruising practical, sail cruising practical, powerboat, keelboat, multihull, personal watercraft and windsurfing. Both RYA interactive courses and Distance Learning courses are available to choose from. Obviously you will need a lot of practical lessons in order to properly complete a course. Some also accept RYA vouchers, so it is possible to give or receive these as part of a gift.
Specialist courses for youth beginners are also on offer. There is no minimum age as such, although most centres take people from the age of 8 years old. There are 4 main stages of the youth course. With training centres all over the UK and worldwide, it is easy to find somewhere close enough to you that teaches the sport. Some of the UK locations include Ulverston, Fleetwood, Windermere, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancaster, Morecambe and Lytham St. Annes.
Sailing is a great sport and can really become part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Many people enjoy the thrill of it and being able to enjoy the great outdoors. It helps to improve strength and confidence both physically and mentally and is well worth considering no matter your age or level of skill!
