Introduction of natural resources :

Water and minerals. We use these gifts of nature to fulfill our daily needs. Early humans did not know how to use these resources. Slowly, they learn to convert these into useful resources. Thus they were able to make natural resources valuable. Many of them are essential for our life, like water, plants and sunlight. Others are used for satisfying our needs. There are many resources in the world whose value is either not known to us or we do not know how to use them. Many countries in the world have not been able to develop their resources.

Classification of natural resources:

Natural resources are divided into two types:

Living resources: Living resources include forests and their products, agricultural crops, grasses and wild and domestic animals. Most of these living resources can reproduce if the conditions are favourable. These are inexhaustible resources. These resources are renewable.

Non living resources: Non-living resources include land, water and air. These are also inexhaustible. Minerals and fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum are also non-living ...
... resources. But they are exhaustible resources. They can be exhausted by over use and cannot be replaced easily as they take time to form. So these resources are non- renewable.

Introduction to uses of Natural Resources

As we know natural resources are very important for human life as well as it is very essential for development and growth of any country. Since some of these resources are not renewable, we must use them carefully.

Some natural resources can be used directly. For example air, water, fruits, can be used directly. Others however need to be processed before they can be used. For example, minerals have to be separated from their ores before they can be used by us. Similarly, petroleum taken out from the earth is in a crude form. It is refined and turned into petrol, diesel, kerosene etc. These products are used in homes and industries.

The demand for natural resources is rising due to the increasing population. The sun is the great source of energy. Solar energy would always available to us. Research is going to tap the energy contained in the sun and use it for different applications. Japan has already manufactured a car that runs on solar energy. Solar energy is rightly called the ‘resource of the future’. Waterfalls are gift of nature. Falling water has great force. Now a days, the force of falling water is used to generate electricity. In this way, waterfalls become a valuable resources.

introduction to natural resources : Conserving Natural Resources

The rising demand for various natural resources has reduced their availability. For example. The cutting of trees and killing of animals have endangered many plants and animals. Many species are either already extinct or are threatened with extinction. The quality of air, water and land resources is also suffering due to over use and misuse. We must preserve and conserve them. The future of the earth and its people depends upon our ability to maintain and preserve the natural resources. Thus all resources should be used carefully and responsibly.
