Modes Of Currency Exchange
When you are going to be traveling overseas, you need to have your currency exchanged to the currency of the country you will be in. There is some debate as to whether it is better to have money exchanged before leaving the U.S. or once you arrive at your destination. If you are new to overseas travel, and not going in a group, it might be best to have all funds changed before leaving so you are not confused or have someone take advantage of you. Experienced travelers usually know the best places to have money exchanged or at least how to find them.
Your Local Bank
Even if you plan on doing most of your currency changing once you arrived at your destination, it is a good idea to have enough money for a meal and a cab ride when you first land. Your local bank can order foreign currency for you, just be prepared to wait a week or so to get it. They will offer it at the current exchange rate and may add on a bit for the exchange.
At the Airport
International airports will be able to change your currency for you. The reason it is better to do it before leaving or after you get to your hotel is because an ...
... airport will charge a larger fee for the transaction.
Use Credit Cards
If you are purchasing things, you can use your normal credit card for the purchase. Your credit card company will add on an exchange fee, but at least you do not have to worry about exchanging the money yourself. If you get a cash advance at an ATM, be prepared for some hefty fees.
Debit Cards
You can also use most debit cards to purchase goods or pay for your hotel. A debit card can also be used at an ATM without the large exchange fees a credit card incurs. If you need extra cash in the foreign currency in a hurry, a debit card and ATM machine are a good choice.
Foreign Currency Exchange Places
No matter where you go in the world, there will be a foreign currency exchange. This place is in the business of exchanging currencies and must maintain a good reputation in order to stay in business. They will have a list of the current exchange rates and then a list of their fees. You can purchase currency, money orders or traveler's checks. This is probably the best place to go when you first get in country and need to change monies. You can choose to buy a large amount and then not worry about it or go on a regular basis and purchase a few days' worth.
Do not try to go into a store and pay for your purchase with American money. If the store will take it, you will not be given a very good exchange rate and will end up losing money. You want to find a place that is reputable and will give you what your currency is worth; minus, of course, any fees they charge for the transaction.
