When you travel in Spring, your destination will greet you in its finest colors: fresh, green and vibrant after drab Winter. Spring is the most glorious season to enjoy a Walking Vacation in particular, when you can appreciate both nature and historical sites, ahead of the noisy crowds and heat of Summer.

To take a spring walking vacation in Europe offers an inspiring, diverse, and beautiful experience - covering the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

As passionate walking enthusiasts - it’s the ideal season to appreciate nature and explore a region. It’s not too hot, or too cold and because it’s much quieter, you are able to appreciate the authentic experience of unspoilt countryside and villages. Once you have tried a Spring Walk, that’s it - you will be converted.

Where to see Spring flowers
The Swiss and Austrian Alps and Italian Dolomites reward the walker with meadows carpeted with the most beautiful wildflowers. In France and Italy, Spring brings the vines into leaf, blossom onto the fruit trees and local people out basking on their ...
... balconies.

The early bird to Britain sees the rolling countryside of Yorkshire as an almost dazzling green, the hedgerows of Cornwall and Devon bursting with wildflowers, the Lake District stretching out before them fresh and invigorating.

Your walking break might also include visits to some of the world’s most wonderful historic gardens. Whether it’s The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, England, Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, Italy or King Ludwig’s palace at Herrenchiemsee in Bavaria, Germany – all are a feast of flowers in Spring.

Where to enjoy the peace of Spring
Most major sites of literary, religious or historical importance are best enjoyed with the space and quiet to soak up the atmosphere and connect with the past. And if you are fortunate enough your guide or walk leader will know the best times to visit sites such as the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi; Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Edinburgh Castle, the battlefield at Culloden, ‘Downton Abbey’ (Highclere Castle), Beatrix Potter’s house in the Lake District, the Roman temple at Segesta, Sicily or The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.

All these places are vastly quieter in Spring. In addition, it’s the invaluable knowledge of the native Walk Leader and Guide, which adds to the experience, helping you to gain a deeper appreciation of the monument’s cultural significance.

Where to taste the freshest regional cuisine
Whilst mainland European countries have firmly established their gourmet credentials, the UK has gained ground and now has a reputation for great, fresh farm-to-table produce. You should make a point of tasting local specialities, including the regional cheeses such as Wensleydale in Yorkshire, Munster in Alsace; mountain cheeses of Austria and the Dolomites and the French array of cheeses. Enjoy fresh fish and seafood in Croatia; roast lamb and sticky toffee pudding in Yorkshire; the freshest pasta pesto in Italy and specialities such as moules frites or coq au vin in France.

The hotels and restaurants that you can stay in should make the most of the locally sourced food on their doorstep, to give guests an authentic taste of the region.

More information on Walking Vacations:
There is a published and free ‘Walk Away Guide’, written by travel writer Everett Potter, which explains why a walking vacation is a great way to explore a country, and how to prepare.

In conclusion, without doubt Spring is a wonderful time to take a break and go for a walking vacation. Not to hot, nor cold, the colour and variety of life will not be seen greater or better at any other time of year.
